One of the earliest known charts of St. John's harbour, when all that existed was the forts, a few houses, and a chain across the narrows.
There is a decorative title cartouche, titling the map as 'Carte du havre de Saint Jean dans l'Isle de Terre-neuve.' The buildings and geographical relief are demonstrated. The water area is coloured light green. Depth soundings of the harbour are marked numerically. The map also shows the location of the chain across the narrows that was pulled tight to try to break the hull of enemy ships arriving unwantedly.
From Jacques Nicolas Bellin, (1703-1772).
The map is framed, with archival mounting,in a neutral white frame. The frame has a lifetime warranty from Michael's.
